HYPNO-EMDR: EMDR for Hypnotherapists

Kate Beaven-Marks

Workshop Description

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, most commonly referred to as ‘EMDR’ is a highly useful and adaptable tool for any professional hypnotherapist. A form of bilateral stimulation™, it can be used to access, process and resolve distressing or disturbing past (or future) experiences, negative beliefs and unwanted body sensations. EMDR is also effective in addressing anxiety (past, present, future events), phobias, and performance concerns (professional, personal, sporting). In addition, EMDR can also beneficially used to develop and enhance supportive positive responses and beliefs. Most commonly, clients follow hand or light movements with their eyes, although other methods of bilateral stimulation, such as taps and clicks, are also taught and the use of electronic and technology solutions is discussed. This highly practical and interactive training will address the theory of trauma, PTSD perspectives and processing disturbance, together with how to assess the client, prepare them for EMDR, use bilateral stimulation to process, addressing blocks and loops, and how to close interim and final sessions. Application protocols for past and recent trauma, phobias, anxieties, and anger, sport and weight management will be explored, as will adaptations for ego strengthening, positive enhancement and future pacing. Therapist and client self-care approaches are also taught. This workshop teaches the hypnotherapist how to use EMDR as a therapeutic tool within their hypnotherapy practice and how to adapt the well-established standard, brief and detailed protocols to suit a vast range of contexts, making it a valuable resource and useful addition to any hypnotherapist’s skill-set.
